In an article by Times Online, the story of the Monica Lewinsky’s affair with the married president, Bill Clinton, is looked at form the perspective of Hillary Clinton and how this scandal shaped her future politics and campaigns. The author feels that Hillary’s husband’s affair drew her much needed sympathy to get elected as senator, as the author writes,

For it was in the wake of the scandal, in which Hillary was seen as the wronged wife, that she decided to run for the Senate from New York. Her shamed husband, anxious to try to make things up to her, eagerly threw his weight behind the move. A wave of sympathy helped to sweep her to victory. ”
