Image via Wikipedia Once it was announced that the Government would have to prop up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Opensecrets.org decided to take a look at all donations made by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to members of congress.
They compiled a list of all donations over the last 18 and a half years since 1989 and astonishingly Barack Obama received $126,349. This is the second highest received by any lawmaker over the last 18 years and Barack Obama has only served for 3 years in the Senate! In comparison John McCain received $21,550 and he was actually in the Senate for the entire 18 years. Could this be why Barack Obama has a soft spot in his heart for these two organizations that will cost the taxpayers so much?
The total donations are based on data released electronically from the Federal Election Commission on September 2 and include contributions to lawmakers’ leadership PACs and candidate committees from the floundering companies’ Political Action Committees and employees. Current members of Congress have received a total of $4.8 million from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, with Democrats collecting 57 percent of that.
