For a country that was founded by those fleeing religious persecution in other lands, it is still common that adherence to the mainstream-Christianity religion plays a role in the presidential election cycle. Mitt Romney – a practicing Mormon experienced scrutiny; in order to counter any anti-Mormon sentiment, Mitt Romney made what was then hailed as a paradigm shattering speech on faith in December. However the religious question Mitt Romney faced pales in comparison to the ‘spotlight of faith’ following Barack Obama. It is this spotlight that caused Barack Obama to fashion the religion of hope.

At the outset of this presidential election, even before Barack Obama announced his candidacy, there were emails circulating that Barack Obama was a Muslim (adherent to Islam and the Islamic faith) and he was educated in an Islamic Madrassa in Indonesia. In post 9/11 America a mere rumor of Barack Obama as a Muslim is enough to turn voters against Barack Obama and instead support Hillary Clinton or John McCain. This conjecture that Barack Obama is a Moslem, seemed to have died until early this week when the following appeared in the New York Times:

“As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.

Of course, as most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written convincingly to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him.

His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim’s family may choose to forgive). ”

However, notwithstanding Edward Luttwak’s opinion in the NY Times over whether Arabic and Moslem adherents in the Middle East believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim, Barack Obama considers himself a Christian. Even as a Christian, Barack Obama has not had an easy ride. Barack Obama claimed in his autobiography “The Audacity of Hope” that his spiritual mentor Reverend JeremiahWright brought him to the Christian faith. Nothing needs to be mentioned here about the storm created by Reverend Jeremiah Wright and for more information please see older posts.

Barack Obama knew from the day he entered the public scene that his faith was a bit of a mess. Barack Obama practically bragged about his Christianity in “The Audacity of Hope” and he was also the first to mention his Islamic roots by pointing out his middle name of Hussein. Barack Obama knew how much faith mattered to American voters and he needed to create a new faith, a faith that he did not harbor any campaign issues for him. Judah Friedman takes the idea of a creation of faith one step further in the Spectator by stating that Barack Obama is the God of his own religion.

“Or is it simply that if I believe in God, I might not need you? How intoxicating it must be for Barack Obama. With every sermon that he gives — excuse me, speech — he has the masses in the palm of his hand. How godlike that must feel, and oh, my God, if they believe in God they might not believe in him. Maybe Barack Obama is God. He constantly promises change. Isn’t that a godlike quality? In his speech about race, didn’t he absolve white people and tell us he understands where we are coming from? Who needs religion or guns to cling to, when we have Barack? He constantly dictates in his sermons how we should move past things that he doesn’t think are important to talk about. After all, how dare anybody question God. He even makes people faint. I have to say that’s pretty godlike.”

So what will it be, will the faith of hope propel Barack Obama to victory in the fall as it seems to have done until now, or will belief in tradition religion prevail.
